Why LER?

Coming to LER is easily the best decision I’ve ever made in my professional career. The LER family has embraced me in so many ways from the moment I came here, and we have such a special culture that can’t be replicated anywhere else.

Research

Lamare’s research interests are in the areas of workplace dispute resolution, labor arbitration, unions and politics, and comparative politics and industrial relations. He has also been known to put in extra time for “research” for his favorite class, Game Theory, by playing Azul with students and alumni.

“My signature research area examines the relationship between work and politics. I think of the workplace as being a deeply political environment, where HR managers and union leaders have the power not just to affect local on-the-job concerns, but also to shape the wider political society in which they live through their actions, choices, and strategies. My research seeks to identify ways in which better workplace practices can contribute to better political climates, and vice versa.”

What The Dean Says

“Ryan Lamare has become a star in his area of scholarship. His work lies at the heart of Industrial Relations. He studies employee voice, for example, and has found that employees in organizations that foster workplace empowerment are more likely to be active in politics, a process he calls “upward spillover.” He has also examined how employee voice plays out in diverse countries where multinational organizations operate.

We’re proud that he has been recognized on the UIUC List of Teachers Rated as Excellent numerous times and received the LER Faculty Teaching Excellence Award twice. He still has time for service, and has been the Secretary-Treasurer for the Labor and Employment Relations Association (LERA), which is the main academic association in the Industrial Relations field and recently became the Editor-in-Chief for LERA journal.”
