Seattle TraveLER – December 16 – 18, 2019

Homewood Suites Seattle Convention Center
1011 Pike Street, Seattle, WA 98101

You are responsible for your own travel to and from Seattle and related travel from airport to hotel. Once you have shared your flight itinerary with us, we will add you to our rooming list for the hotel.

Be here by the evening of Sunday the 16th. We will depart the hotel by 7 a.m. on Monday morning the 17th.

LER will pay for Sunday and Monday night’s accommodations at this hotel. On Tuesday, the hotel will hold your bags during the day on Tuesday if you don’t want to drag them around downtown Seattle.

Breakfast is available at the hotel both mornings at no charge.

Your room will be shared with another student, assigned by LER. We will pay for the room, but for NO INCIDENTAL CHARGES. If those are charged to the room, we will have you pay for those charges.

If you cancel prior to the event, you will owe us a $100 fee for the hotel room.

If you fly in and would like inexpensive transportation to the hotel, the light rail runs within blocks of the hotel, and a map is available here:

We’re in Seattle, and all of these professional locations are more casual than typically seen in most visits. You are fine to wear jeans if they are NICE; jeans or slacks are fine. Don’t bring skirts, and don’t bring shoes that are not closed – not tennis/gym shoes, but something else. Loafers, flats, boots – whatever is comfortable for walking and somewhat professional (and doesn’t mind the rain) is fine. Short-sleeved shirts are fine, but you can’t wear something sleeveless on the Boeing tour.

All of this is a long way of saying – business casual to the nice jeans version of business casual. If you wear something with words/logo, please go for orange and blue.

You may not be able to participate in all tours if you don’t have this attire.

They are scheduled for rain during our visit – please bring an appropriate jacket and small umbrella.

Please recall – NO PHOTOGRAPHS INSIDE THE VISIT FACILITIES, specifically Boeing. Keep your phones off and away unless you are invited to take pictures.

See below for the target times and addresses, along with my alumni tour contact for each location. If you are not with us for the departure, we’ll leave you a message, but you will be responsible for getting to the location on your own. LER will ONLY provide for the group transportation – if you miss the group, you will pay your own travel or find your way on your own on foot.

The Boeing Company, Monday December 17

We will be touring their Everett Manufacturing facility and related museum. We will have to provide a security list prior to attending.

This is an AMAZING facility – a must-see.

Boeing will provide transportation to the site from our hotel at 7 a.m. on Monday morning. If you don’t come down and meet the bus, you are responsible for your own transportation to meet us, or you will miss this portion of the tour.

We will be at the Everett facility by 8:15 a.m. – Building 40-21, Door S-1. We will have a tour and presentation, and will be taken to lunch with Boeing representatives at Lombardi’s Restaurant (19409 Bothell Everett Hwy, Bothell, WA 98012) at 11 a.m. Our return to the hotel will be around 1 p.m. and you will have time to explore the area prior to our evening happy hour.

Alumni Happy Hour – Re:Public Seattle, 5:30 p.m., Monday December 17

429 Westlake Ave N, Seattle, WA 98109

You can walk or Uber to the location on your own. The LER staff will probably walk there at 4:45 to ensure that everything is set, and you’re welcome to walk with us. Some food will be provided, but you will be responsible for the cost of any other food and any alcoholic beverages after your first drink.

Amazon Spheres Tour,  Tuesday December 18

We will have a visit at our hotel at 8 a.m. from LER alumna Nastassja Rinderle. No formal presentation at that time, but she’ll join the group to eat breakfast and network, as well as help us to learn about Amazon’s HR. and then walk to the Spheres facility for a tour (2121 7th Ave. Seattle, WA 98121).  At that location, alumna alumni Jennifer Basinger, HR Director Finance, is lined up to spend 15-20 to (quickly) share her journey to/at Amazon as well as a breakdown of the Amazon leadership principles. Following that, we will have a little panel (including  Eilis Murphy) of HRBPs to do a Q&A with the group.  Once that wraps (~9:50-10) we’ll break up into smaller groups and go on a mini tour (Day 1, Amazon Go, Spheres) which will take 30-40 min.

Zillow Group – Tuesday December 18

We will be at Zillow Group Headquarters (1301 Second Avenue Floor 31. Seattle, WA 98101) by 11 a.m. to tour the site, hear about HR at Zillow, and have lunch. LER alumnus Dan Spaulding is the Chief People Officer of Zillow and will be joining us for this event.

Following the Zillow-centric part of the visit, we will be joined by an alumni panel to talk about HR in the Puget Sound area and in technology. We plan to have alumni reps from Uber, PepsiCo, Expedia and Microsoft.

Once this is complete – the LER portion of your trip is done, and you will be responsible for your transportation to your flight. Remember that the hotel holding our bags this day after checkout.

For those who wish to stay at the hotel for another evening, we have a special rate of $114 that you can use for any extra add-on evenings. You’ll need to book this in the coming weeks to take advantage of that. Several of us will be going to the airport for a hotel that evening. Prior to our departure or at some other point during the trip, we may visit Pike Market and/or the Space Needle – anyone who wishes to join us for the informal sightseeing is welcome to do so – all costs incurred will be your own.
