Professor Emily E. LB. Twarog was appointed as the Inaugural Ronald and Lilia Peters LER Faculty Scholar in May 2024. She was honored at a ceremony at LER featuring School leadership, and Professor Ron Peters. Professor Twarog is a professor in the Labor Education Program and the Director of the Regina V. Polk Women’s Labor Leadership Conference.
Trained as a historian, Twarog’s research takes an intersectional approach to examining the history of women, work, and organizations, as well as current strategies for building women’s leadership within the labor movement. She is currently working on a book that explores the history of sexual harassment resistance among US service sector workers in the 20th century.
The Faculty Scholar award was made through a generous donation by Professor Emeritus Ronald Peters, who hopes to leave a legacy and support faculty for decades to come. Ron joined the University of Illinois’ Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations in 1976 and led the Labor Education Program for over 30 years. Under Peters’ leadership, the program educated thousands of students and union members on grievance procedures, contract negotiations and bargaining, labor history, and many other topics facing labor leaders.
