In spring 2023, the LER podcast, Listen & LERn, was created by CJ Capalar, MHRIR 23. It is a student-created, student-run resource that features students, faculty, staff and alumni of the program. They tell their journey before, during, and after the School, including research interests, HR trends, and unique features of the program. The podcast serves to help future students learn about the program and why it’s a fit, but also keeps graduates informed of what is happening on campus.

Current students Amy LaScala and Anthony Gonzalez, both set to graduate in December, run the podcast. Amy and Anthony give their thoughts on why it is a valuable resource:

“As an out-of-state student contemplating a move to Illinois to pursue my master’s degree at LER, I discovered the Listen & LERn podcast, dedicated to education around the master’s program at LER run by current students. Hearing the incredible stories and experiences of the students interviewed made it easier for me to relate to them and ultimately helped solidify my decision to attend school here.

Working on the podcast alongside my co-host, Anthony, has been a remarkable full-circle experience. We get to connect with and learn from the inspiring success stories of our students, faculty, and alumni, diving deep into their journeys and insights. Each episode not only strengthens our community within LER but also enriches our understanding of the diverse perspectives that make this program unique and share them with listeners. It’s been fulfilling to be able to contribute to a platform that has made such a meaningful impact on my own journey!”

“Before starting graduate school, I wanted to get some more insight into the program. I discovered the Listen and LERn podcast, which helped me learn about LER and everything this program had to offer through the perspective of a student.

When granted the opportunity to take over the podcast and work alongside my co-host Amy, I was excited to see how much we could make it grow. It was a great opportunity to do the same thing for future students looking for a real-life perspective. We were able to connect with leaders in the field, as well as other students from various backgrounds. Being able to provide content for the broader population about LER has been such an honor and fulfilling experience.”
