Certificate in Labor & Employment Law

Beginning in the Fall of 2020, the Labor Education Program within the School of Labor &  Employment Relations at the University of Illinois will begin offering an exciting new Certificate in  Labor & Employment Law for open-enrollment students.  All classes will be taught by Stephanie Brinson, Lecturer, J.D., who was a practicing Chicago union-side labor attorney for 13 years before joining the U of I faculty.  Students may enroll in any one course or take all six 7-hour courses (42 total hours) to complete the Law Certificate.  Note that students completing the Labor Education Program Certificate may only take Labor Law Seminar for Private Sector and Labor Law for Illinois Public Sector as an elective satisfying the legal class element of that certificate program.

Introduction survey course and deep critical analysis of essential Constitutional rights, statutes, regulations, and case law related to the Illinois Public Labor Relations Act (public sector).

Employment Discrimination Law Seminar – Saturday, December 5, 2020
9AM – 4:30PM

Introduction survey course and deep critical analysis of essential Constitutional rights, statutes, regulations, and case law related to employment discrimination including, but not limited to, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (Title VII), EEOC, ADA, ADEA, and the Illinois Human Rights Act.

Employment Relations Law Seminar – Saturday, January 9, 2021

Introduction survey course and deep critical analysis of essential Constitutional rights, statutes, regulations, and case law related to employment relations including, but not limited to, FLSA, FMLA, Illinois Wage Payment and Collection Act, disability rights and OSHA.

Legal Advocacy Skills for Union Reps – Saturday, March 13, 2021
9AM – 4:30PM

The two intensive labor & employment legal writing workshops are an advanced writing workshop for those interested in developing successful written advocacy when representing union members before various legal tribunals including arbitrators and labor boards.
