Profile

M. Teresa Cardador is an Associate Professor of Labor and Employment Relations and Center for Social and Behavioral Science Affiliate at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. She received her Ph.D. in Organizational Behavior from the University of Illinois Gies College of Business. She also holds a Master’s in Public Health Policy and Administration and a Bachelor’s in Psychology from the University of California at Berkeley. Dr. Cardador’s research examines how occupations, work environments, and personal orientations toward work (e.g., callings) affect how workers experience meaningfulness and a sense of purpose. She is particularly interested in the experience of workers in gender-segregated occupations, such as engineering, surgery, policing, and nursing. Cardador is published in a number of top-tier academic journals, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Journal of Organizational Behavior. Her work has been featured in Harvard Business Review and other professional audience outlets. She is on a number of editorial boards, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Organizational Behavior, and Journal of Vocational Behavior, and served as a past editorial board member of Academy of Management Journal. She is an award-winning teacher covering topics such as human resource management, management, employee motivation and performance, employee relations, and negotiation. Cardador has received grants and fellowships from the National Science Foundation and Center for Advanced Study and has been involved in several grant planning initiatives focused on furthering faculty success, representation, and retention. She was elected to the Academy of Management’s Managerial and Organizational Cognition (MOC) Division Executive Committee in 2020 and served as MOC Professional Development Workshop Chair from 2020-2021, MOC Program Chair from 2021-2022, and currently serves as the MOC Division Chair.
