Advancing A Just Clean Energy Transition

The Climate Jobs Institute (CJI) is a bold new initiative housed within the School of Labor and Employment Relations, created to ensure that Illinois’ clean energy transition uplifts workers and communities. Established by the Illinois General Assembly in April 2022, CJI is one of the first academic institutes in the nation dedicated to studying the labor market and economic impacts of decarbonization.

Our mission is to guide climate policy that reduces emissions while promoting high-quality job creation, especially in historically underrepresented and environmental justice communities.  We envision a clean energy future where workers thrive, communities prosper, and climate action drives economic opportunity.

In just a short time, the Institute has grown into a dynamic hub for applied research, policy engagement, and student mentorship. We produce policy reports, tools, and resources that inform state and federal decision-making, and we actively engage with labor unions, industry leaders, policymakers, and frontline communities to ensure that the clean energy transition is equitable and inclusive. We are proud to mentor student researchers, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and contribute to shaping Illinois’ climate and workforce policies.

As we continue to grow, we invite alumni and stakeholders to connect with us, support our mission, and help build a future where climate solutions and good jobs go hand in hand.
