School of Labor and Employment Relations

The School of Labor and Employment Relations (LER) at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has been a leader in workplace-focused education and research for nearly 80 years. Initially founded in 1946 as the Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations (ILIR), we have evolved to meet the changing needs of the workforce while staying true to our mission and preparing students for impactful careers in human resources, labor relations, and beyond.

Our Master of Human Resources and Industrial Relations (MHRIR) program is one of the top HR programs in the country, providing students with the skills, connections, and hands-on experience they need to succeed. We also offer a PhD program for those looking to advance research in labor and employment relations and professional development courses designed for working professionals.

Our faculty are more than experts. They’re mentors, researchers, and industry leaders shaping the future of work. With a strong alumni network and partnerships across industries, our graduates go on to lead in corporate HR, consulting, labor organizations, and government agencies.

At LER, we believe in the power of people. Whether you’re a student, employer, or researcher, we invite you to be part of our community.
